Fans and alumni of the Miami Hurricanes (including this reporter) who grew up on a steady diet of star quarterbacks and future NFL standouts at almost every position have to be a little frustrated over what has been going on with the football program. They lack offensive continuity, and it has turned this season into a fair-to-middling affair. And they will sink under the .500 mark on Saturday if they do not beat the Florida State Seminoles.
Hey – FSU has a tradition of winning as well, so the frustration works both ways. When considering the job security of head coach Willie Taggart, there is a close call against (egad!) Louisiana-Monroe.
So the FSU-Miami game is not the dramatic matchup it used to be. Rather than have a possible spot in the national title game on the line, these teams simply hope to get a step closer to bowl eligibility as they meet in Doak Campbell Stadium at 3:30 PM ET.
At BetAnySports, customers can get better odds with reduced juice, and while they watch the game on ABC, they can place wagers in real-time with Sports Betting Ultra.
Speaking of reduced juice, it is included in these NCAA football odds:
Florida State Seminoles -3 (-110)
Miami Hurricanes +3 (+100)
Over 49 points (-102)
Under 49 points (-108)
You get the sense that Miami has never really been settled at the quarterback position. Jarren Williams, a redshirt freshman, won the job late in fall practice, and then was overwhelmed in the opener against Florida when he was sacked ten times. The ‘Canes converted just two of 14 third down opportunities, and all these woes have continued through the season. Only one team in the nation has been less proficient at converting third downs than the Hurricanes, and just four teams have allowed more sacks. Florida State does not necessarily have a fierce pass rush, but it can become a lot more fierce when you have a pair of freshman tackles, including one work in progress (Zion Nelson) who actually had to gain fifty pounds in six months to grow into the position.
Both Williams and N’Kosi Perry have experienced shoulder problems. Williams was named the starter for this game, but head coach Manny Diaz has been working out Tate Martell a little with the first team, so maybe the Ohio State transfer, who has been playing as a wide receiver, will see some playing time.
Of course, if your offensive line isn’t functioning well, it’s going to affect everything.
Thankfully, Miami is in the nation’s top twenty when it comes to defending the run, and they are yielding just three yards per carry. What we envision is that they will concentrate first on slowing down Cam Akers, who is averaging better than five yards a pop as FSU’s rushing anchor. They can do it too; Diaz may be struggling to fix the team’s offensive problems, but defense is his forte, and it is why the ‘Canes reached out and literally stole him back from Temple after he left his spot as defensive coordinator before Mark Richt retired.
Florida State’s quarterback situation is not necessarily all that settled either. It was thought that Alex Hornibrook would provide some stability when he arrived in Tallahassee as a graduate transfer from Wisconsin. But James Blackman has actually played more, although Taggart appreciated the former Badger’s “game manager” skills in the 35-17 win over Syracuse last week.
A game manager isn’t going to out up a lot of points against this Miami defense, though.
And since the Hurricanes can’t get a lot going on offense, regardless of the QB, they may not be the most reliable dog here. In fact, the best evidence we’d have to take the points is the fact that fifteen of the last 17 meetings have been decided by seven points or less. In other words, the games are close.
For us, however, we feel much more comfortable going UNDER in this ACC matchup and traditional rivalry.
